George is the capital city and geographical hub of the world
renowned Garden Route, it is situated in a picturesque
environment on a coastal plateau between the Outeniqua
Mountain Range and the Indian Ocean, causing the town and
surrounding area to have a temperate climate throughout the
year.
In George there is the Drostdy, a graceful old building that
houses a museum, the George Museum itself, the Old Slave
Tree, a 1886 year old oak tree that has an iron chain
embedded in its trunk, the St Peter and St Paul Church, the
oldest existing Roman Catholic church in South Africa, the
St Mark's Cathedral - one of the smallest cathedrals in
South Africa.
And do not forget the beaches at the secluded Victoria Bay -
which is renowned for surfing, especially during winter
months - and Herold's Bay, a small, sheltered holiday resort
with large tidal pools.
